Chapter 10 Other Ancient Cultures

When you play the flute in Zanzibar all Africa dances. ~Zanzibar Proverb

This chapter starts with an extensive introduction to other musical traditions around the world not covered elsewhere. As just one example, here is a collection of scales from Africa. As you will see, some of them are actually built up with knowledge of the harmonic series. I have my doubts that the “Fortuna” scale of Ethiopia is really built off of such a complex collection of very high harmonics. Other scales in the complete chapter are 53-eq approximations of the measured pitches of ancient instruments from, well, everywhere.
